UN to open E Timor investigation
Reporter: Mark Bowling

TONY JONES: The pressure continues to build on East Timor's Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, with confirmation that he's agreed to a United Nations investigation into the incidents that led to the country's crisis.

Esta investigação foi solicitada pelo Governo. Aqui parece ser o contrário.

The UN's representative in East Timor says the Alkatiri Government may ultimately have to be dissolved before reconciliation can go ahead.

Disse, senhor Hasegawa? Onde? Se disse, terá que explicá-lo.

Well, Mr Alkatiri met with UN officials today, as well as with Australia's Defence Minister Brendan Nelson. From Dili, Mark Bowling reports.

MARK BOWLING: Brendan Nelson arrived for a briefing on the unfolding political and security drama. First, a meeting with Foreign Minister Jose Ramos-Horta, and then with President Xanana Gusmao. As they discussed the grim state of the nation, just one kilometre away, Australian troops combed the back streets of Dili, hard pressed to bring rival ethnic gangs under control.

BRENDAN NELSON, DEFENCE MINISTER: The Australian military is now in a position where we've got the East Timorese with a judicial system that is now beginning to work. We are detaining people, we are bringing them before a magistrate, and if they are found guilty, then, they are further being detained.

MARK BOWLING: The centrepiece of Dr Nelson's visit was a meeting with East Timor's Prime Minister, Mari Alkatiri, leader of a government under siege. The latest blow to Dr Alkatiri's standing comes from the United Nations, which has been so closely attuned to events in East Timor.

Loucura total!

The Prime Minister is to face an investigation by an international tribunal.

Mentira.

It's to be a transparent probe into the events that have split East Timor's military and resulted in the death of nine policemen.

The UN's special representative in East Timor says the Alkatiri Government could be dissolved before reconciliation can take place between the rebel soldiers and East Timor's leaders.

Dedução manipuladora do jornalista.

SUKEHIRO HASEGAWA, UN HEAD OF MISSION, EAST TIMOR (RADIO INTERVIEW, 'THE WORLD TODAY', ABC): I think, in the long run, this is possible. But, I think, due course of fact-finding, investigations, and process of justice, have to be carried out before that happens.

MARK BOWLING: Yesterday, a convoy of protesters demanding Dr Alkatiri's immediate resignation turned into a show of force on the streets of Dili.

Estamos a falar de 2.000 pessoas.

There are more big rallies planned, and the pressure on the Prime Minister is likely to mount.

Não há mais nenhuma manifestação planeada.

As Australian troops attempt to stop the gangs, these are some of the weapons seized during special operations - a reminder to Dr Nelson of the dangers to which Australians are exposed.

At least three States have agreed to send extra police to East Timor and the Federal Government has welcomed the move. Addressing troops at the end of his Timor visit, Dr Nelson said soldiers won't be paid as much as their counterparts in Iraq or Afghanistan. The conditions, he said, have been classified as non-warlike.

BRENDAN NELSON: The advice I've received from the Australian Defence Force, through the Chief, was that the deployment, at this stage - although it's under constant review - is non-warlike. And we've put it at the very top end of non-warlike.

ROBERT McCLELLAND, OPPOSITION DEFENCE SPOKESMAN: Quite frankly, it's penny pinching. It will mean they won't be entitled to about $150 additional payment a day.

MARK BOWLING: Troops can take some heart - the Defence Minister says the importance of their mission is recognised by a proud Australian public. Mark Bowling, Lateline.

Escandaloso...
