EAST Timor's Parliament threw its support behind embattled Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri today, standing up to renegade troops and protesters calling for his removal over the violence in Dili.
"The Parliament will not make any decision that will oust the Prime Minister," Parliament chief Francisco Guterres said.
"The Prime Minister was elected by the majority party, Fretilin," he said.
"Even if the President agrees to the removal of the Prime Minister, he must coordinate with the Parliament. There has been no such decision up until now."
Many blame the violence on Mr Alkatiri's decision to sack 600 of the 1400-strong army after they protested about alleged discrimination against soldiers from the west of the country.
Rebel troops and thousands of protesters have been demanding Mr Alkatiri's removal.
But Parliament is controlled by Mr Alkatiri's Fretilin party, which only a few weeks ago re-elected him as its chief.

Esclarecimento:
A Fretilin não "controla" o parlamento. É o partido com maior assento parlamentar.
A "propaganda" da imprensa australiana é tão pouco séria quanto o seu governo.
Exactamente porque a Fretilin é o partido maioritário expresso pelo voto do povo em eleições livres e democráticas a única via para demitir o PM seria através de uma "crise" antes da lei eleitoral publicada e da realização de eleições para que não se corra o risco de uma reeleição.
I believe it would be a lot easier for Australian public opinion if some of these comments would appear in English.
It would also be a better way to make the Australian media to 'feel' srutinised by international public opinion.
And it would provide them no excuses about 'translation miss-haps'.
And last but not least, it would be much easier for the Australian Inteligence Services (and other Echelon users...) monitoring what's going on ETimor in cyber space.
