The 25-member contingent of New Zealand Police deployed to Timor-Leste last week has begun work in the Becora district of Dili.
They are working alongside New Zealand Defence Force and Australian Federal Police already working in the area, supported by the Portuguese GNR. The New Zealand and Australian police staff at Becora will be joined shortly by staff from the Royal Malaysian Police.
The contingent is operating out of the Becora Police Station east of central Dili and will be engaged primarily in community policing work to help restore community confidence.
New Zealand Police Senior National Officer Assistant Commissioner Grant O'Fee says the team is looking forward to working with the New Zealand Defence Force and the international police contingent.
"There has been an encouraging response from the public. In the coming weeks we will build on the excellent relationships already established.
"It is already apparent the Kiwi policing approach works well here and is appreciated."

"Fretilin is the winning party, with 43 seats in the national election, and 12 of the 13 district seats. The 88-member assembly will consist of one representative from each of East Timor’s 13 districts, with the rest of the seats divided on a proportional representation basis. President Xanana Gusmão: “Major Alfredo left to clam down the situation”
President Xanana Gusmão reiterated that Major Alfredo and his elements have left F-FDTL Military Headquarters to ensure the safety of the population in Aileu and to calm the situation. Gusmão said Alfredo continues to subjugate to Brigadier General Taur Matan Ruak but feels it is not appropriate yet for them to return to Dili. President spoke with the media following a meeting with Alfredo Reinaldo at his residence in Balibar
Major Alfredo reportedly said he is prepared to meet with Brigadier General Taur Matan Ruak to inform him about his decision to go to Aileu as per military procedures. He says he still recognizes Ruak as F-FDTL Brigadier General and would like to hold a dialogue to recognize the President’s authority as the Supreme Commander of the armed forces and is prepared to go anywhere at the President’s request.
In the meantime, Brigadier General Taur Matan Ruak reportedly said the behaviour of Major Alfredo Reinaldo is considered to be worse than that of the petitioners. Speaking during RTTL’s talks show, “Interactive”, Taur said that the main concern nowadays is not from the 591 petitioners but of Major Alfredo’s group who has recently left the armed forces headquarters. “ I would like to inform the public, he [Alfredo] left the city without authorization and acknowledgement from the command,” said the head of F-FDTL. He added that the desertion of the petitioners without weapons is already considered critical, let alone the ones fully armed. The Brigadier General said he is making an effort to speak to Reinaldo and convey to him not to use the weapons taken and to return them to the F-FDTL institution. (DN, TP, STL)

O contingente da polícia da Nova Zelândia com 25 membros destacado para Timor-Leste na semana passada começou a trabalhar em Becora, distrito de Dili.
Estão a trabalhar ao lado das Forças de Defesa da Nova Zelândia e da Polícia Federal Australiana, já a trabalhar na área, apoiadas pela Portuguesa GNR. À equipa da polícia da Nova Zelândia e Australiana, juntar-se-à brevemente a equipa da Polícia Real Malaia.
O contingente opera no Posto da Polícia de Becora, a leste do centro de Dili e começará por se engajar principalmente no policiamento da comunidade para ajudar a restaurar a confiança na comunidade.
O Comissário Assistente Grant O'Fee, da Polícia Nacional da Nova Zelândia diz que a equipa espera trabalhar com as Forças de Defesa da Nova Zelândia e o contingente internacional de polícia.
"Tem havido uma resposta encorajadora do público. Nas próximas semanas construiremos excelentes relações que já estabelecemos.
"Já é aparente que o modo de trabalhar do policiamento Kiwi dá bons resultados aqui e é apreciado."
