EAST TIMOR -SECRET WAR IN 2001 -

Featured are two Australian soldiers, Scott Sherwin and "Pete" who survived an attack by Militiamen, believed to be Indonesian Special Forces, Kopassus, in disguise, on the Indonesian/ East Timor border in 2001. They reveal they were treated as outcasts by the United Nations and the Australian government because it could have disrupted sensitive diplomatic relations with Indonesia.

“This was a secret war waged by the Indonesian military as revenge, pure and simple,” Sasha Uzunov said. “Indonesian Special Forces, known as Kopassus, were dressing up and pretending to be militia. Their objective was to kill Australian and New Zealand soldiers. We‘re not talking about rogue elements.”

When Sasha Uzunov was serving in East Timor in 1999 he had the good fortune to share accommodation with the some US Army Green Berets, Special Forces soldiers, who were gathering intelligence. They told me that this was a “gunfight between you Aussies and the Indonesians.” They made no mention of the militia whatsoever.

It took pressure from US president Bill Clinton to convince a reluctant Australian government to get involved in East Timor in 1999, he said. “Unfortunately our government and bureaucrats seem to tremble with fear every time Indonesia is mentioned.

One of the soldiers interviewed, Scott Sherwin, tells of having to conquer his fear of going to East Timor in 2001 because he had heard of the grisly death of New Zealand soldier Private Leonard Manning, whose body was mutilated by the Militia in July 2000.

In October 1975 five Australian-based journalists were killed in Balibo, East Timor, by Kopassus soldiers, in the lead up to Indonesia’s invasion of the former Portuguese colony in December 1975. In 1999 East Timor declared its independence and peacekeepers were sent in.
