Army email sparks furore

A YOUNG army officer has been threatened with physical violence after he revealed sensitive operational details from East Timor in an open e-mail.

"Gilly from Timor" sent the e-mail to his mates on June 4 and it has generated fiery responses after being widely circulated.

The artillery officer angered his infantry comrades by describing them as "dumber than I thought".

"Gunners can do everything that they can, but they just do it smarter and quicker," he wrote.

But it was the breach of operational security by the officer that has really upset his colleagues. The need to protect sensitive details of military operations is drummed into all recruits.

"We have all been given the brief to disarm pretty much everybody in the country including the police and army," Gilly wrote.

"So in the first day . . . we cleaned out about 15 glocks, heaps of pepper spray, batons, you name it."

He then related how his platoon was made the Company Ready Reaction Force.

"I had to take out the RRF three times on the second day. Once in the arvo to help a fed cop out, once to disarm three big gangs . . . and basically scare them into being nice . . . and then at 0700 we had to react almost the entire company to some big riots across the road."

Gilly then went on to describe United Nations aid workers as "wankers", the RAAF as "jack pricks" who waste water washing their hands and SAS troops as "hooning around at top speed".

He went on to discuss how his unit would secure the town and retrain "corrupt cops and armed forces".

"It still looks like at least a six month depoloyment for us."

The army officer complains about having the media in his face and his e-mail concludes with a wish that it be passed to anyone who wants to abuse him while he is in Dili.

Judging by the responses obtained by News Limited his wish has been granted.

A Townsville based infantry soldier called Macca wrote a lengthy e-mail to Gilly accusing him of being in an intimate relationship with his mate.

"It's good to see another fine product from ADFA is getting his moment in the sun. I hope those blokes from 1RAR who were such a hindrance to you appreciate the fine, three year taxpayer funded holiday you went on in Canberra made you the tactical genius you appear to be," Macca wrote.

He said he was glad to hear that Gilly had had the media in his face.

"I and a few others who haven't met you personally yet will be looking for it," Macca wrote.

He reserved his strongest criticism for the breach of operational security.

"I was waiting for some news on exactly which sub-units were where and what they were doing. It was very helpful you mentioned them by name on an unsecure means."

"Good luck champ. I can't wait to catch up with you when you get back to Townsville to hear all about it. It is a small army after all."

Other respondents were less subtle.

"What a cock - if he doesn't hang over this, I will tongue my own a..e," wrote a Captain from 2 Cavalry Regiment.

"This bloke should be broken like a shotgun and horsef...ed," wrote another soldier.

"Apesar de frágil, Timor-Leste é uma jovem democracia em que acreditamos. É o país que escolhemos para viver e trabalhar. Desde dia 28 de Abril muito se tem dito sobre a situação em Timor-Leste. Boatos, rumores, alertas, declarações de países estrangeiros, inocentes ou não, têm servido para transmitir um clima de conflito e insegurança que não corresponde ao que vivemos. Vamos tentar transmitir o que se passa aqui. Não o que ouvimos dizer... "
