EAST Timor renegade Alfredo Reinado has promised revolution or a fight to the death unless the interim Government of Jose Ramos Horta is sacked and executive power handed to President Xanana Gusmao.
Major Reinado, who along with dozens of his followers escaped from jail in Dili on August 30, is on the run deep in the country's rugged inland and says that if international troops, including Australian soldiers, try to take him by force "all they will find is my dead body".
In an interview to be screened this week on Indonesian television, he accuses deposed prime minister Mari Alkatiri of "holding the remote control that directs the Government, using his agents on the inside".
Major Reinado says he is prepared to take responsibility for his part in the violence that rocked East Timor in May, leading to the loss of about 30 lives, "but only when the law itself is loyal to the little people".
So long as other political players behind the deadly clashes remain free, he says, he will not turn himself in and that his arrest on July 25 "at the orders of Jose Ramos Horta" was an attempt to silence him.
Major Reinado was imprisoned on attempted murder and firearms charges, but said he escaped after a 30-day time limit to bring proceedings against him had passed without anything happening. "I didn't run from the law. I'm here to give the law a chance to be implemented correctly," Major Reinado says.
He claims Mr Ramos Horta's administration is under the influence of "what I can call the Mozambique mafia, including Mari Alkatiri with his gang".
Dr Alkatiri, who stood down as prime minister in June after violent protests, was responsible for shaping a national budget handed down by Mr Ramos Horta, which will see regional and infrastructure development carry on aggressively.
One of the rallying cries against Dr Alkatiri was that his government was not funnelling money back to the districts - a perception his own budget attempted to address.
When he resigned, Dr Alkatiri vowed to carry his ruling Fretilin party to victory at elections due in May next year. But Major Reinado says in the interview that he doubts the country will be stable enough for polls to take place.
"We have given the Government time to resolve this problem but if they cannot resolve it, there must be a revolution, involving correct law enforcement, and all the leaders who have broken the law must be ready to face trial."
He says the Australian-led Joint Task Force had only been used "to hunt the people, including my group". "Why have they done this? We are not criminals, we are not thieves. We're not the oppressors of the people."

O desertor Alfredo Reinado de Timor-Leste prometeu uma revolução ou a luta até à morte a não ser que o Governo interino de José Ramos Horta seja despedido e o poder executivo entregue ao Presidente Xanana Gusmão.
Major Reinado, que juntamente com dezenas dos seus seguidores fugiu da prisão em Dili em 30 de Agosto, está em fuga no interior do país montanhoso e diz que se tropas internacionais, incluindo soldados Australianos, tentarem apanhá-lo à força "tudo o que encontrarão é o meu corpo morto ".
Numa entrevista a ser vista esta semana na televisão Indonésia, acusa o deposto primeiro-ministro Mari Alkatiri de "guardar o controlo remoto que dirige o Governo, usando os seus agentes no interior ".
O Major Reinado diz que está preparado para assumir a responsabilidade da sua parte na violência que rolou em Timor-Leste em Maio, levando à morte de cerca de 30 vidas, "mas somente quando a lei for leal para a gente pequena ".
Enquanto outros jogadores políticos por detrás dos confrontos mortais se mantiverem livres, diz, não se entregará e que a sua prisão em 25 de Julho "às ordens de José Ramos Horta" foi uma tentativa para o silenciar.
O Major Reinado estava preso por tentativa de homicídio e acusações de armas, mas disse que fugiu depois de ser ultrapassado um limite de 30 dias para que o processassem, sem nada ter acontecido. "Não fugi da lei. Estou aqui para dar uma oportunidade à lei para ser implementada correctamente," diz o Major Reinado.
Diz que a administração do Sr Ramos Horta está sob a influência de "o que posso chamar de máfia de Moçambique, incluindo Mari Alkatiri com o seu gang".
O Dr Alkatiri, que saiu do cargo de primeiro-ministro em Junho depois de protestos violentos, foi o responsável pela feitura do orçamento nacional entregue pelo Sr Ramos Horta, que prevê o desenvolvimento regional e das infra-estruturas serem feitos agressivamente.
Uma das críticas contra o Dr Alkatiri er que o seu governo não estava a canalizar o dinheiro para os distritos - uma percepção que o seu próprio orçamento tentou responder.
Quando resignou, o Dr Alkatiri prometeu liderar o seu partido no poder, a Fretilin para a vitória nas eleições previstas para Maio do próximo ano. Mas o Major Reinado diz na entrevista que duvida que o país seja suficientemente estável para se realizarem eleições.
"Demos tempo ao Governo para resolver este problema, mas se não o resolverem haverá uma revolução, envolvendo aplicação correcta da lei, e todos os líderes que quebraram a lei devem preparar-se para enfrentar julgamento."
Diz que a Joint Task Force liderada pelos Australianos só foram usadas para "perseguir pessoas, incluindo o meu grupo ". "Porque é que fizeram isso? Não somos criminosos, não somos ladrões. Não somos os opressores do povo."
Why do people keep addressing Reinaldo as "Major". He should be stripped of this title. He does not have the honour of a Major. He does not serve the country.. he serves himself and his ambitions!
He is so critical of the government yet he has nothing educated to say. If he thinks he can do a better job then why doesnt he come up with a better alternative then?
He thinks the country will be too unstable to take to the polls next year.... but yet who is creating the instability??? If he truely wanted to find a better resolution to the current crisis then why does he not support the interim government in trying to do so so that the elections will take place and the new government will be democratically elected just like the previous one was.
And for Reinaldo to say "we are not criminals... we are not the oppressors of the people..." What a joke.... You bring fear among the pople. your group create instability.. people ARE NOT FREE to walk the streets of Dili... Is that not oppression???
