The dream was not for FRETILIN to rule for 50-100 years. The dream is for a peaceful East Timor.
I am a FRETILIN supporter and I will be the first one to admit that East Timor needs stronger opposition parties to challenge FRETILIN. The challenge to FRETILIN's politcal strength needs to come from the political parties, not the President. The President's actions are setting an unacceptable precedent in Timor Leste.
The problem in East Timor is that the opposition parties aren't putting any policies out there that will alleviate the poverty in the country. Point to me the strategic plan that they have outlined to improve the country, what they plan to do with oil revenues and what they plan to do with the health system. The opposition parties can't just get behind the President to hide their deficiencies.
From my observations, all the opposition parties do is spend there time criticising the government. They say they are for the people and that they understand the people, but what is exactly is their plan to bring East Timor out of poverty and maximise the use of its resources? How are they going to solve illiteracy? Seriously, please point me to a place where I can see those policies. I am keen to see what the vision of the Opposition Parties is for East Timor and how they are going to achieve it.

Are you saying that Alkatiri's government (not everything) has been setting good precedents for the future. Do you think that the countless numbers of times the law has been disregarded for the las 4 years are a good precedent? Do you think that the latest mismanagement of internal security affairs are a good precedent? Do you think that having a former ministers under investigation for alleged crimes against the state is a good precedent?
You you are genuinely concerned about Timor's future you should also look into all that and not just dismiss it as persecution as some are so quick to argue.

Sou um apoiante da FRETILIN e sou o primeiro a admitir que Timor-Leste precisa de partidos da oposição mais fortes para desafiarem a FRETILIN. O desafio da força política da FRETILIN precisa de vir dos partidos políticos, não do Presidente. As acções do Presidente estão a abrir um precedente inaceitável em Timor-Leste.
O problema em Timor-Leste é que os partidos da oposição não estão a apresentar nenhumas políticas que aliviem a pobreza do país. Mostrem-me o plano estratégico que elaboraram para melhorar o país, o que pensam fazer com os rendimentos do petróleo e o que planeiam para o sistema de saúde. Os partidos da oposição não se podem somente abrigarem-se atrás do Presidente para esconderem as suas deficiências.
Pelo que observo, tudo o que os partidos da oposição fazem é passar o tempo a criticar o governo. Dizem que são a favor do povo e que compreendem o povo, mas qual é exactamente o seu plano para tirar Timor-Leste da pobreza e maximizar o uso dos seus recursos? Como é que vão resolver o problema da iliteracia? Seriamente, por favor, indiquem-se um local onde possa ver essas políticas. Estou desejando conhecer qual a visão que os partidos da oposição têm para Timor-Leste e como pensam atingi-la.

I never said the Alkatiri government was perfect and I support investigations into all parties involved, including against Alkatiri and Lobato. If either are proven guilty by a court of law (not the media) then they should be punished by the law. If they are innocent they should be allowed to return to politics. I am not afraid to admit that FRETILIN itself has made mistakes, but I am sure the independent investigations will reveal that there are many others at fault as well.
I was also merely pointing out that the opposition parties need to get their act together from a policy perspective to challenge FRETILIN. I still haven't been shown anything that would suggest they have a clear strategic vision for the country.
The challenge to FRETILIN's political power needs to originate from the opposition parties as they are members of parliament. The President is not a member of parliament and has a clearly defined constitutional role as President. If the President wants to intefere in parliamentary politics the President needs to leave his current role and start a political party himself.
The constitution is the highest and most important law of the country and that is why the President's actions are setting a dangerous precedent for any constitutional crisis that arises in the future.
