PRESS RELEASE
Dili- 17 March 2008. A team of experts from the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) arrived in Timor-Leste today for an eleven-day visit to conduct an assessment on key areas of support provided by UNMIT to Timor- Leste.
This assessment mission was planned while the Untied Nations was reviewing the mandate of UNMIT. It is part of the overall support provided by the UN for the security sector in Timor-Leste.
The team, led by UN Police Advisor Mr. Andrew Hughes, includes representatives from DPKO, the United Nations Development Fund, the International Centre for Transitional Justice, UNMIT and the PNTL.
The team will examine the progress of the development of the PNTL in light of their work with the UN Police since 2006 and provide support to the overall reform of the PNTL.
The team will consult with political leaders, government officials, and key members of civil society including both national and international organisations.

Dili- 17 Março 2008. Uma equipa de peritos do Departamento da ONU para as Operações de Manutenção da Paz (DPKO) chegou hoje a Timor-Leste para uma visita de onze dias para conduzir uma avaliação a áreas de apoio chave fornecidas pela UNMIT a Timor- Leste.
A missão de avaliação foi planeada ao mesmo tempo que a ONU estava a rever o mandato da UNMIT. É parte do apoio geral providenciado pela ONU para o sector da segurança em Timor-Leste.
A equipa, liderada pelo Conselheiro da Polícia da ONU Sr. Andrew Hughes, inclui representantes do DPKO, Fundo de Desenvolvimento da ONU, Centro Internacional para Justiça Transitória, UNMIT e a PNTL.
A equipa examinará os progressos do desenvolvimento da PNTL à luz do seu trabalho com a Polícia da ONU desde 2006 e dará apoio à reforma geral da PNTL.
A equipa terá consultas com líderes políticos, entidades do governo, e membros chave da sociedade civil incluindo organizações nacionais e internacionais.

Perhaps this mission can examine the total silence that has been manifest from the UN in recent weeks in the face of security forces abuse by PNTL during operation Halibur and the State of Siege. Perhaps they can respond to why the UN SRSG has remained completely silent when the government acts in complete breach of the UN Security council resolution on the mandate of UNMIT (which by virtue of the RDTL constitution is law) and a breach of RDTL law by setting up and commanding the mnahunt operation for Salsinha and group. Perhaps the UN will pass some small comment on the breaches of the rule of law by the government of RDTL during the state of siege. Perhaps the Un will seek to retrieve its credibility as the world's peace keeper by exercising its mandate in the areas of security and defence as it should. Or perhaps they will come, look around and go. Perhaps.
Ms Pires spent most of her life in Australia and had in recent months acted as a representative of Reinado. The Australian-led International Stabilisation Force said in a statement it had met her "in a public place in Dili" in January as a conflict-avoidance measure. The ISF said it had used her contact with Reinado to ensure his men and the ISF knew each other's general movements, and added that she was "not a paid informant of the ISF and no money or gratuities were ever passed to Ms Pires".
Who are they kidding? Ms Pires was an Australian sycophant! She hung around Australian Defence Force Officers, she drank with Australian embassy officials and partied with them, she was heaped with favours from both groups and had a friend in common with them.....Alfredo Reinado. Anyone who spend any substantive time in Dili would see her with ADF- Defence Cooperation staff who were part of the capacity building efforts with F-FDTL. So it is right perhapsd for the ISf to deny in the formal manner they did. The question should be more one of her her broader relationship with the ADF personnel and Aust embassy staff.
