I think you are totally oblivious to the fact that Mari as a leader during the crisis is prepared to face his responsibilities. Whether Mari the countless allegations against him is substantiated or not he must be given credit for resigning at the request of those who are willing to stop at nothing to achieve their objectives to which up to know is becoming clearer.
It is about time that the President is scrutinised and also face his responsibilities as to his actions before and during the crisis. One of his most serious accusations that the FRETILIN leadership was illegal is already proven to be incorrect, the judges at the highest Timorese court delivered what was a unanimous and conclusive judgement. Another example was his public address that divided the eastern and western districts peoples (from Manatuto to Oecussi speech) which resulted in the burning of the Taibessi market and the beginning of the clashes between groups from the eastern and western districts. He must explain his reasoning for requesting the resignation of a Prime Minister using an Australian television program as substantiated evidence without the requisition of formal investigation. The President must explain why the Rebels/Petitioners continue to hold allegiance to the President, he is in the company of those whose actions amount to subversion or conspiracy against the state (remember that it is alleged that the President provided the housing for Alfredo who was later to be caught with arms).
There are many serious allegations that can be raised against the President, he needs to be accountable for some of his actions during the crisis. There is no alleging that the President is guilty of any wrong doing, what is being presented is that like Mari the President must also face up to his responsibilities and if at the end his actions are justified then we can say the President has done what is right by the people. Timor must be ready to accept the facts, the President the Government and other institutions must be scrutinised if we are to find out what really caused the current crisis.

Está a chegar a altura de o Presidente ser escrutinado e também de assumir as suas responsabilidades quanto às suas acções antes e durante a crise. Uma das suas acusações mais sérias, que a liderança da FRETILIN era ilegal, já foi declarada incorrecta, pelos os juízes do mais alto tribunal Timorense que deram uma sentença unânime e conclusiva. Um outro exemplo foi a sua comunicação pública em que dividiu as pessoas dos distritos do leste e do oeste (o discurso de Manatuto a Oecussi) e de que resultou o queimar do mercado de Taibessi e o início dos confrontos entre grupos dos distritos do leste e do oeste. Ele deve explicar o pedido de resignação de um Primeiro-Ministro usando um programa duma televisão Australiana como evidência fundamentada e sem o pedido de uma investigação formal. O Presidente deve explicar porque é que os Amotinados/Peticionários continuam a guardar fidelidade ao Presidente, ele está na companhia dos que cujas acções atingiram a subversão ou conspiração contra o Estado (lembre-se que é alegado que o Presidente providenciou habitação para Alfredo que mais tarde foi apanhado com armas).
Há muitas alegações sérias que podem ser levantadas contra o Presidente, ele deve ser responsabilizado por algumas das suas acções durante a crise. Não estou a alegar que o Presidente é culpado de algum erro, o que defendo é que tal como Mari o Presidente deve também assumir as suas responsabilidades e se no fim se concluir que as suas acções foram justificadas então podemos dizer que o que o Presidente fez foi certo para o povo. Timor deve estar pronto para aceitar os factos, o Presidente, o Governo e outras instituições devem ser escrutinadas se queremos descobrir o que realmente provocou a crise corrente.
‘Fretilin Grupo Mudança’ Will Hold Extraordinary Congress
‘Fretilin Grupo Mudança’ will hold the second extraordinary congress following extensive consultation with former delegates as well as representatives from the districts. The extraordinary congress will be held at the end of the month of September. According to Victor da Costa, leader of the group, the second extraordinary congress has the full consent of the members.
In the meantime, former coordinator and founder of Ojetil, [a youth group of Fretilin] called Traccoa stated that it is necessary to hold the second extraordinary congress in order for Fretilin to win the 2007 elections. Traccoa further said that in 2001 many members left and joined other parties due to their dislike of the system applied by Mari Alkatiri in Fretilin. Therefore, he added, it is important to hold the extraordinary congress to change the leadership. (STL)
Representative of Fretilin Reformist Group (FRG) stated that an Extraordinary Congress will be a unique solution to secure the party in the 2007 General Election.
Victor da Costa, the coordinator of the FRG stated that, “in order to gain a victory in the coming election, we must fix the problems of the Fretilin leadership. We found that the current leadership is no longer good. I say this because the current leaders do not want change. For example, they always prevent us from effecting any political change. However, for the betterment of the party, we would like to bring change to the leadership of Fretilin, including reformation of the members of Central Committee of Fretilin”.
He said that “although Court of Appeals decided to legalize and legitimize the result of the second Fretilin Congress, we of the Reformist Group will leave it to the people to decide. Again, the decision will be in the hands of the people and not that of the Court of Appeals”.
