Dr. José Ramos-Horta : The Prime Minister
Ironically this internationally recognized leader of Timor-Leste has spent most of his life exiled from his homeland.
Educated in a Soibada catholic mission, Ramos-Horta trained and worked as a journalist.
When Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975, Ramos-Horta was on his way to the United Nations Security Council, urging them to take action in the face of the Indonesian Military onslaught that killed one third of the Timorese population.
Despite his exile, in 1991 Ramos-Horta was elected Vice President of the National Council Maubere Resistance (CNRM), an umbrella organization of pro-independence movements both in and outside East Timor.
In 1998, he was again elected Vice President for CNRM's successor organistaion - CNRT.
In December 1996, Dr. José Ramos-Horta shared the Nobel Peace Prize with his fellow countryman Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo.
The Committee chose to honor the two laureates for their "sustained efforts to find diplomatic solution to the conflict of East Timor based on the people's right to self determination.
The Committee considers Dr. José Ramos-Horta the leading international spokesman for East Timor's cause since 1975.

Very impressive indeed. But can you exhibit his High School certificate? If my memory doesn't betray me, he failed junior high school and therefore did not fulfil the requirements to attend Senior HS. Could you also inform us when and where was he tained as a journalist? It is only for pure curiosity.
A whole world more impressive than Mari's that's for sure.
Now if only we give him a fair go at showing us what he can do as Prime Minister it would only be good for Timor.
By having all this honourary degrees proves nothing, when there is 150 thousand IDP, houses still being burnt and people to scared to go back their places due to lack of security.
A lot of people, including myself have been fooled and led to believe that Mari was the root of problem.

I guess an easier way to put things into perspective would be to look at it the other way around.
What if Mari Alkatiri had not resigned? What would the situation be in Dili today?
Very impressive indeed for someone from East Timor.

Not perfect, but simple "the best".
I hope he continues to be sucessefull as East Timor will also reap the benefits.
To obtain a law degree in Australia takes at least five years full time(when it is a combined bachelor degree) or two years if it is a masters of law full time. It would take the same amount of time to complete equivalent qualifications in other universities around the world (unless they give their law degrees away!)
Accordingly, can someone please tell me when Ramos Horta had time to obtain his doctor of laws at UNSW or the other various universities? Was he in six different universities at the same time?
It does read as an impressive CV, but its certainly not matched by some of his comments so far (eg. divide people in Dili into east and west townships or detain people for three months! The latter is disturbing given that JRH has so many legal qualifications!). He does talk a lot of nonsense for a highly educated man.
Parece-me que falta apenas um diploma de Gestao e Administracao Publica. Com tanta bagagem nao sei como pode ter sido embrulhado por um estagiario a terceiro escriturario da administracao publica portuguesa em Timor!
Foi sempre um cabula durante o tempo do Liceu, tendo feito apenas a seccao de letras do antigo quinto ano dos liceus. Mas eh preciso reconhcer que ele eh um espertalhaco, agora se eh inteligente tenho as minhas duvidas, ainda por cima com tantos cursos tirados uns em cima de outros em diferentes Universidades!

A proposito do que o anonimo das 12:2053 escreveu e verdade: Falhou la no Liceu Dr. Francisco Vieira Machado, andou a aprender como se tirava fotos la no Centro de Informacao e Turismo e as caladinhas foi enviado para outra ex-Provincia Ultramarina depois de ter assaltado um sentinela do Centro de Instrucao (quando tambem era militar) porque tinha padrinhos!

The only thing ironic about Ramos Horta having spent so much time in exile is the fact that people attack Alkatiri for the same thing.
And Alkatiri speaks Indonesian - not bad for someone who was attacked for favouring the Portuguese language.

Your right- i have no idea what "Doctor Honoris Causa" is. Thats partly why I asked the question as to how he was able to get so many "Doctor of Laws" in such a short space of time. Are they short courses or are they just an honorary title? I don't know.
They are "Honorary titles" given normally to "arse lickers".

The question is whether it is worse or even the same as before. Or do you think that it would have been better if the gunfights continued?
Admitedly the problems are not over yet. However I tend to agree with the assesment that there has been a relative improvement from the total caos and open armed hostilities between military and armed civilian groups that enveloped Dili before Mari resigned.
But that is only my opinion. What is your?

E ninguém reparou no "pormenor" da residência normal do actual PM de Timor-Leste ser Dili e Sydney?

But that is not my argument, we were told by the current leadership that Mari had to go that he (Mari) was the problem. But the “problem” still exist: Burning, stoning, looting.. etc.

That's why. He has a point to prove. Only him (and FRETILIN for that matter), can create stability or instability.
The man himself said so. He's proving it for those who didn't take him seriously.
