Secretary-General welcomes establishment of new Timor-Leste Government, calls for spirit of reconciliation as country prepares for electionsSG/SM/10559
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General welcomes the establishment of a new Government in Timor-Leste. He congratulates Jose Ramos-Horta on his appointment as Prime Minister, and looks forward to the formation of the full Government, which he trusts will serve the needs of all Timorese.
The Secretary-General calls on all parties in Timor-Leste to move forward in a spirit of dialogue, unity and reconciliation, as the country prepares for its first presidential and parliamentary elections since independence.
He also looks forward to receiving the report of his Special Envoy, Ian Martin, on how the United Nations can best assist the Timorese people, as they build a democratic and peaceful future for their country; and he thanks Mr. Martin for successfully completing his important and sensitive mission.

There is great internal and external expectations in what will probably be one of the most important elections ever for Timor since 1999. It will deliver what the real voice of the people. During the crisis many leaders used the "people" name to put forward their agenda, the elections will reveal whether those individuals really represent the people or not.
Bring on the elections!

O Secretário-Geral dá as boas-vindas ao estabelecimento de um novo Governo em Timor-Leste. Congratulou José Ramos-Horta na sua nomeação como Primeiro-Ministro, e espera a formação do Governo completo, que confia servirá as necessidades de todos os Timorenses.
O Secretário-Geral apela a todas as partes em Timor-Leste para se moverem para a frente num espírito de diálogo, unidade e reconciliação, quando o país se prepara para as suas primeiras eleições presidenciais e parlamentares desde a independência.
Também espera receber o relatório do seu Enviado Especial, Ian Martin, sobre como é que as Nações Unidas podem melhor apoiar os Timorenses para construir um futuro democrático e pacífico para o país; e agradece a Mr. Martin por ter completado com sucesso a sua missão sensível e importante.
