Australia's military and police role in East Timor will be put on a more solid footing with the signing of a new agreement with the United Nations, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says.
Mr Downer, currently in New York, said on Saturday he had discussed with new UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon the situation in East Timor, where there is a UN mission working alongside Australian and other foreign personnel.
He said Australia was about to sign a memorandum of understanding with East Timor and the UN which would formalise ties between the Australian Defence Force and other international forces commanded by the Australians and the UN deployment in East Timor.
"This will be done in the next few days," he told reporters.
Mr Downer stressed Australia had a strong relationship with the UN on the issue of Asia's youngest nation, East Timor, since 1998.
"They have done a good job there in a difficult circumstance," he said. "I said to the secretary-general I think the UN can continue to play, and must play, a very important role in mentoring and advising the East Timorese political leadership. "It's difficult for international individual governments to do that with other governments, for obvious reasons, but it's a role the UN particularly can play and is suited to."

O Sr Downer, correntemente em Nova Iorque, disse no Sábado que tinha discutido com o novo Secretário-Geral da ONU Ban Ki-Moon a situação em Timor-Leste, onde há uma missão da ONU a trabalhar ao lado dos Australianos e de outro pessoal estrangeiro.
Disse que a Austrália estava prestes a assinar um memorando de entendimento com Timor-Leste e a ONU que formalizará os laços entre as Forças de Defesa Australianas e outras forças internacionais comandadas por Australianos e o destacamento da ONU em Timor-Leste.
"Isto será feito nos próximos dias," disse aos repórteres.
O Sr Downer sublinhou que a Austrália tinha uma forte relação com a ONU na questão da mais jovem nação da Ásia, Timor-Leste, desde 1998.
"Têm feito um bom trabalho em circunstâncias difíceis," disse. "Disse ao Secretário-Geral que a ONU pode continuar a jogar, e deve jogar, um papel muito importante na monitorização e aconselhamento da liderança política Timorense.
