A man has been hacked to death and another 17 people injured in overnight gang fighting in East Timor's capital, Dili, a hospital official has said.
Meanwhile, two of the country's main martial arts gangs are fighting in the city's streets, after minor clashes over the weekend escalated on Monday morning.
Gangs armed with rocks, swords, metal bars and bows and arrows are facing off in central Dili.
Following violence overnight, two men are in a critical condition at the national hospital after being attacked by rival gang members armed with machetes and knives, paramedic Nelson da Silva Carmo said.
It is the latest flare up in the tiny nation since unrest earlier this year, triggered by the firing of a third of the army, left 37 dead and drove 55,000 from their homes.

"Apesar de frágil, Timor-Leste é uma jovem democracia em que acreditamos. É o país que escolhemos para viver e trabalhar. Desde dia 28 de Abril muito se tem dito sobre a situação em Timor-Leste. Boatos, rumores, alertas, declarações de países estrangeiros, inocentes ou não, têm servido para transmitir um clima de conflito e insegurança que não corresponde ao que vivemos. Vamos tentar transmitir o que se passa aqui. Não o que ouvimos dizer... "

Alfredo is behind this recent violence. No doubt about it. The violence is carried out by 7-7, a group which supported him during his attack on the F-FDTL at fatoahi and whose members attacked and burned the houses of Fretilin members of parliament and prominent Lorosae people. Whe Alfredo came down to fatoahi in May 2006, he said it was to portect his people, in and around Culau where this group operates. Culau is behind Taibessi and were the same people to have burnt the Taibessi markets in April 28, just before the petitioners demonstration errupted. The groups are lead by Joao Becora or Joao Choque, who is on the President's reconciliation team and was in Suai for the "seminar". Alfredo is behind this violence and everyone knows it.
