Song and art to herald peace and unity and to remember a good man
The people of Dili are invited to Independence Park on Sunday and Monday to celebrate peace and unity through the arts and to remember Brazilian missionary Edgar Goncalves Brito who was brutally murdered on Tuesday.
A program of music, theatre, painting, poetry and dancing will mark the beginning of a period of celebration which will include the 31st Independence Day on Tuesday (November 28), and on December 10 the 10th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the Prime Minister Dr José Ramos-Horta and Bishop Carlos Belo.
As part of the Soru Mutu Ba Dame program of events, free films will also be shown in the park, which is behind Motael Church. The park is beautifully shaded and perfect for families and there will be free face painting for children. Soru Mutu Ba Dame relates to a peaceful future with a pledge to forgiveness, mutual tolerance and national solidarity.
“This should be a time of looking forward to peace and unity for our country,” Dr Ramos-Horta said.
“But I would also like all the people of Timor-Leste to remember Mr Brito who was murdered earlier this week. Mr Brito was a missionary who lived his life for the Timorese people. He was a kind, caring and gentle man and I hope he is never forgotten by Timor-Leste.
“We should all stop for a time and think about this young man’s love for our people and his work.
Dr Ramos-Horta said he hoped the 10th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize heralded an era of forgiveness and friendship for all Timorese people.
“The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the people of Timor-Leste. It belongs to them and December 10 is for the people to celebrate,” he said.
This Sunday and Monday’s events begin at 2 p.m. and finish at 6 p.m. From 7 p.m. free films will be shown in the park.
The visual arts groups Sangar Masin and Gembel from Dili, and Sangar Matak from Manatuto have worked with the Colmera, Airport and Motael Church IDP camps to produce colorful banners to decorate Independence Park.
Mobile “graffiti walls” will be available for aspiring artists and music groups will be able to demonstrate their talent in a kind of karaoke.
The coordinator of the events is well-known musician Ego Lemos, singer with the band 5 do Oriente.

The Timor Post published today on the front page an article titled "Kolimau 2000 accuses PSHT for politically conspiring with Democratic Party" accusing PD of being the conspirators with PSHT (infamous martial arts group) who are always involved in criminal activity arising from a conspiricy with PD to use violence as a tool to winning the 2007 elections.
Now who will write crticising this conspiricy?
