Ms Sonia Neto, political/economic advisor? What a joke. What is Sonia going to advise on? She was useless whilst working as the COS of the then Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Ramos-Horta.

Sonia was respected for her competence and personal skills.

And now we miss that in the cabinet. OK?

Sonia did a great job in East Timor since she was working as an UN volunteer.

Ramos-Horta had a great Chief of Staff during lots of years.

Ask Ramos-Horta, Xanana Gusmao, the bishops, Alkatiri and the members of the oposition.

Much better than the present staff.

Sonia respeita timorenses. Não liga a inveja. Sentimos tua falta.

For Immediate Release

Sonia Neto, International adviser in the MNEC leaves Timor-Leste for Brussels.

After five years of uninterrupted and outstanding service in Timor-Leste, Sónia Neto, from Portugal, will leave Timor-Leste by the end of March for a new post in Brussels. Ms. Neto will be working in the European Commission under the Presidency of Dr.José Manuel Durão Barroso.

Born in Angola and holding Portuguese citizenship, Ms Neto first arrived in Timor-Leste in January 2001 as part of the UNTAET team to work on Civil Registration. Later the same year, Ms Neto was assigned as Director of the Political Resource Center, established by the late Sergio Vieira De Mello, to provide much needed technical assistance to the emerging political parties. Ms Neto discharged her responsibilities in the newly-created Center, with admirable competence and integrity, earning the respect of all concerned.

In October 2001 Ms Sónia Neto was recruited by UNDP as an international adviser in the MNEC a post she has held with zeal, professionalism and loyalty for five years, earning the respect, gratitude and friendship of everyone in the MNEC.

Ms Neto was responsible for multiple tasks, namely managing the office of the Senior Minister, liaising with other government ministries, UN agencies, locally and internationally. The same time as part of the UNDP-funded capacity program, Ms.Neto was tireless and diligent in working with several national counter-parts, preparing them to take over the very challenging job as Chief of Staff to one of the busiest and demanding Foreign Ministers in the world!

In 2002 the Senior Minister elevated Ms Neto to the post of Chief of Staff, a position she has held till now. Ms Neto will end her association with the MNEC on 31st March. As part of her last assignment, Ms Neto will accompany the Senior Minister on an official visit to Portugal and to Geneva, where the Minister will attend this year’s session of the UN Commission on Human Rights.

Commenting on Ms. Sónia Neto’s time and work in Timor-Leste, the Senior Minister and Nobel Laureate said:

“Ms Sónia Neto is one of those true internationalists, representing the best ideals of the UN, dedicated, working long hours and week ends, very loyal to the UN which she serves but also to the people of Timor-Leste and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. We will all miss her presence, her loyal support and professionalism. But we know that Ms Sonia Neto will be a great advocate for Timor-Leste wherever she will be.”
