Vanuatu contributes towards UN Peacekeeping missions

Radio Australia - 09/11/2006, 17:51:24

Vanuatu has sent eleven police officers to East Timor as part of its contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions in the world's troubled spots.

Although the small pacific nation has just 490 police and paramilitary forces, Vanuatu has more than 40 officers on peacekeeping duties overseas in places such as Africa and Solomon Islands.

Vanuatu's deputy police commissioner, Arthur Caulton, says the UN tests the Vanuatu officers on the special requirements of peacekeeping deployments before they are sent overseas.

"Vanuatu is unique in that our officers are now in Africa are bilingual, they can speak English and French as well, so that was one of the requirements for deployment to the African countries and Haiti, and so I think that's unique to Vanuatu," he said.
