I think we both agree on one point that Mari has the right to continue his work in Politics pending the results of investigations or any court actions. Whether FRETILIN chooses him as a candidate in forthcoming elections it is as agreed ultimately their choice. I believe he still has confidence and has won greater respect from many members of FRETILIN whether any one likes it or not.

I also would like to point out that FFDTL had been engaged in the Petiosioner issue since January 2006. The FFDTL after exhausting all efforts to resolve the issue dismissed the Petiosioners, citing many relevant issues such as discipline, involvement of some members in illegal enterprises and most importantly that the Petitioners abandoned their barracks (desertion) that carries serious penalties in the Military. After considering the attempt of the FFDTL to find a solution and the need to preserve a form of autonomy within the army in its decision making the Government supported the decision of the Military.

The only person not supporting that decision was the President, who also during the crisis triggered the ethnical unrests by making inflammatory remarks. The President never acted in the interest of the nation by not engaging or participating in any dispute resolution initiatives. The President had remained silent over the course of the issue even though he was one of the first recipients of the Petition from the Petitioners and the "Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces".

The President has dealt with the issue precariously. He had tried to resolve the issues outside the confines of the constitution yet he was unsuccessful. He could not dismiss the Prime Minister (only received Mari's resignation), remove the whole Government from office nor dissolve the Parliament. The President is looking less like the unifying symbol that he once was.

Maybe you could shed some light into the Presidents actions during the crisis.

Tanto disparate!

Xanana nunca vendeu timor e nunca o fará.

The president did not agree with the decision but accepted it. Stop twisting the meaning of things!!

The President is as much respected by the people as before. Have we forgoten Mari's supporters yelling Viva Xanana?
come on! lets be serious!
And don't give some excuse that they did that because they were such well educated crowd! No one will buy that.

Anónimo disse...

The president is still well respected, but his reputation will still be damaged after these events. Some of Mari's supporters did yell "Viva Xanana", but others booed him as well. Also, if I have understood reports correctly, when the President and Ramos Horta went to Metinaro they were booed quite badly.

The notion is that he was not "supportive of the decision", whether he agreed to it or not is another issue.

The President did struggle with some of the questions put forward to him and that was also not reported. Well the Government is still FRETILIN dominant. The elctions will be the determining factor. If FRETILIN wins the elections or regains its majority then I think some influential leaders will lose their credibility.

Anónimo disse...

I think Fretilin will have to make substancial reforms to its structure if it wishes to mantain its popularity. Mari is no longer viable PM and if Fretilin insists on carrying him on as the next PM they will find that many of their supporters will turn their backs on the party.
The recent events and attempts to mobilize large numbers of people to support Alkatiri at the height of the crisis failed dismally and, by default, revealed how unpopular he really is in Timor.

The evidence pointing to that unpopularity is abundant and Fretilin should be wise not to misread it as it could cost them the next election.

Part of the reason why people who supported FRETILIN did not attend the rally was that they were scared to come out in full support, particularly from the western part of Timor (where the armed rebels are) and also in Dili (where the gangs are).

Also FRETILIN gave a direct order that its supporters in Dili not join the rallies as it was too dangerous. That FRETILIN is able to get a much bigger rally than the "Pro-Xanana" supporters in a dangerous envrionment says a lot about the support they have.

I do agree that FRETILIN has to re-structure and that it has to learn from its mistakes, which I am confident that they will do. Its been a difficult period and I hope that all Timor's leaders learn from it.

One thing that still does not fit in my head is how can a PM, supposedly a nationalist who loves his country and people, profess openly and publicly the spilling of blood of the people if his party was to suffer a defeat.

I cannot visualize any other democratic leader in another country making such statments.
Is that normal? Acceptable?

Does that reflect a deep sense of statesmanship? Am I just out of touch with reality? Or has the world gone crazy, so crazy infact that it became normal for rulers to threathen those they rule with bloodshed if things don't go their ways.

I just cnnot comprehend it!

Can you please tell me where the PM said his comments in relation to "the spilling of blood of the people if his party was to suffer a defeat". If you can point me to a transcript that would be great.

Thanks

The history of timor is not all in a transcript they you can access via the net. Alright! get that in your head once and for all margarida.
The story was run on all local newspapers and news on TVTL (state TV) and I am sure the arquives are there although you cannot access it from portugal.

Anyone who lives or lived in timor would know that controversy and the news articles that even resulted clumsy oficial denials from Mr. Antoninho Bianco on state tv news and a different account of the speaker of parliament, Mr. Luolo saying that altough Alkatiri had said it should not be taken literally.

For the people that really matter in this process (the timorese people) this fact is well known and undeniable.

Soif you dont believe it tough luck but your opinion from portugal does not count much in the real process.

I am not from Portugal and I am not magarida. I just wanted to see the speech for myself so that I could make up my own mind as to what Alkatiri said. I always prefer to do this in relation to any speech that is given by any politician. There is no need to get all fired up about it as I wasn't doubting that what you said was the truth. It is just that I want to see the transcript and make up my own mind. I will track it down myself.

Contrary to many opinions I think FRETILIN has become a stronger unit as a result of the crisis. I dont think re-structuring the Party is needed at the moment. What will happen is the marginalisation of the group within FRETILIN who were campaigning for change during the FRETILIN's congress.

FRETILIN thrives in crisis situations, and I think the recencent crisis will only help to consolidate the current leadership within FRETILIN.

The elections will be the test, and if any re-structuring needs to occur only after the elections. Should FRETILIN lose the next elections you will have the catalyst for change. If FRETILIN wins the elections it shows that the people have confidence in the current FRETILIN leadership and hence no change will be the outcome.

Anónimo disse...

10:55:27 AM Anonymous. You will not find that transcript in any document other than media reports. If you can get access to the arquives of the local newspapers aswell as TVTL evening news service then you will certainly find the articles and the interviews of the government official Antoninho Bianco, Minister for the Presidency of the Council of Miniters, and Luolo,Speaker of the parliament. These two official figures were interviewed on TV giving conflicting explanations for that statement from the PM. Mr Bianco denied outright whereas Mr Luolo confirmed it but said the meaning of that statement could not be read literally.

Anyway good luck but ask anyone in timor. They will tell you it is true
