Men killed outside Timor church during evening prayers

Two men were stabbed to death outside a church during evening prayers in East Timor, a hospital official said on Monday, in the latest violence to disrupt the tiny nation since foreign peacekeepers arrived in May.

Four other people, including a Chinese citizen, were injured in the fighting on Sunday night between rival gangs in the capital, Dili, said Antonio Caleres, director of the Dili National Hospital.

Stone throwing between two groups of youths spread to the Aimutin Catholic Church where windows were smashed before two unidentified men were stabbed, witnesses said. Both were killed within blocks of the church.

The Chinese citizen was stabbed in the stomach, Caleres said. No other details were immediately available.

Antonio Transfiguracao, head of the Salesian priests in East Timor, said the violence was particularly disturbing because it occurred "near the holy place when Mass was going on .... we have lost our dignity as human beings."

Meanwhile, Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, whose resistance to Indonesia's bloody occupation of East Timor earned him a shared Nobel Peace Prize with Prime Minister Jose Ramos Horta in 1996, said he would meet renegade soldiers to help find a solution to ongoing political instability.

Belo, now a missionary in Mozambique, is on a 10-day visit to his troubled country.

"It's time to end the violence and crisis," he told refugees today.

"It is very easy for us to kill our East Timorese brothers and sisters ... our culture is culture of war and not a culture of peace."

Belo said he will hold talks with fugitive renegade military police commander Alfredo Reinado - who escaped from prison in August with dozens of inmates - and others representing the dismissed soldiers.

Ramos Horta, speaking before boarding a flight to the Vatican, said he would ask Pope Benedict XVI to visit East Timor, since the pontiff's presence could help ease tensions.

"I look forward to discussing many issues with him ... including ways to help the poor people in this country," Ramos Horta told reporters.

East Timor, a former Portuguese colony occupied by Indonesia until 1999, plunged into crisis in April when nearly 600 soldiers were dismissed after going on strike to protest alleged discrimination.

Violence spilled into gang warfare, looting and arson that left at least 33 people dead and sent 150,000 fleeing from their homes.

Calm largely returned with the arrival of international troops and the installation of a new government, but isolated incidents still occur.

"Isolated incidents still occur"? More people have been killed since the arrival of international forces than during the whole time when they were not here. In fact the most incidents in one day other than the shooting of the Police Officers by rogue armed elements in late May 2006, has been on anumber of occasions since the international forces arrived.

But whilst all this is happening, Horta runs off to "meet the Pope". And when does he do that? He leaves Timor on the day before the most improtant day for the nations Muslims, Idil Fitri. Is that so that he is not embarrassed by his present and have to visit a mosque or participate with the community on this festive religious day? To meet on top of it all with the Pope who has said what he has recently said about Islam and then had to back off. This PM does nothing which is not calculated and to avoid risk. As an Indonesian Muslim I am appalled by his antics. You don't reconcile or create friendship with us that way.

And I ask, why does he leave so many times for overseas when his nation is still in civil turmoil? Does he care more about meeting the pope than helping his people?....thats how we see it.

Reinado is in Suai. He is being given safe haven by a Catholic priest by the name of Father Natalino. I hope the Prosecutor General and his team look at this clear case of harbouring a fugitive from the law. I hope also that he is held responsible for any further harm that may come to anyone in future as a result of Alfredo being able to again use violence against anyone.

For that matter I hope that the priest in Becora Church who helped the prisoners, possibly including Reinado, to escape will also be investigated with respect to any offences relating to harbouring and aiding fugitives to escape from lawful custody. Is it not the Church which is always calling for Justice, Justice Justice. Father Martinho Gusmao is very quiet now isn't he? But I also hope other people are investigated for helping and harbouring people like Alfredo after he committed the offences for which the ICI recomended he be charged for. As a matter of fact why did the ICI not make any recommendations with respect to other people who harboured and aided Alfredo after the Fato Ahi shootout, a shootout that even the President of the Rep said he should be held responsible for before the law, on the same day or the day after the shoot out? Why would anyone subsequently help him after a person of such high authority has expressed such a view of a criminal act? But more to the point, should anyone helping him be investigated? Too many questions and not enough answers yet. The answering of some of these questions will truly give us the answers as to whether democracy and the rule of law still exist in Timor-Leste.
