“Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the East Timorese government had asked for the extra security help, consisting of a «company strength» deployment of troops
and up to 70 more Australian Federal Police and to be sent as soon as it can be arranged.
Australia already leads a multinational security force in East Timor and has deployed almost 800 troops and dozens of police there. Troop numbers in East Timor would total about 1,000 after the new deployment, Rudd said.
«Someone out there tried to assassinate the political leadership of our friend, partner and neighbor,» Rudd told a news conference in the capital, Canberra.
…
Gusmao requested the boost in Australian security forces, Rudd said.”
