  2. What is your problem?

This is 2007, not 1975. Portugal and the Portuguese language no longer have a captive audience in East Timor, whether you like it or not.

Indonesian may not be a language of local culture, but it is a language of popular culture, because of the widespread availability of Indonesian TV and music. Teaching the East Timorese about Cames and Pessoa would be better spent on showing them Trovante and GNR music videos and episodes of Morangos com Acar.

Why should the East Timorese, or anyone else in Southeast Asia, take Portugal seriously? Lisbon has no interest in the region, apart from preserving cultural relics of its colonial past.

The Portuguese should show they really care, put their money where their mouth is, and start going to East Timor in large numbers as tourists and investors, not just as police and judges.

Otherwise, who can blame the East Timorese if they think that Portugal is too poor and far away to be of any importance?
