A New Zealander who helped organise East Timor's independence vote says the process was free and fair, despite claims of corruption.
An inquiry into violence following the poll has been told by the Indonesian military commander at the time that the vote was marred by cheating by the United Nations.
But the Wellington lawyer, Dr Andrew Ladley, insists the vote was conducted fairly.He says a UN investigation into the claims found that the violence was mainly caused by pro-Jakarta militias.
People in East Timor will vote in a presidential election on Easter Monday.

Um Neo-zelandês que ajudou a organizar a votação para a independência de Timor-Leste diz que o processo foi livre e correcto, apesar de queixas de corrupção.
Num inquérito à violência que se seguiu à votação foi dito pelo comandante Indonésio das forças militares na altura que a votação fora machada por batota pela ONU.
Mas o advogado de Wellington, Dr Andrew Ladley, insiste que a votação foi dirigida com correcção. Diz que uma investigação da ONU às queixas concluiu que a violência foi principalmente causada por milícias pró-Jacarta.
As pessoas em Timor-Leste votarão para eleições presidenciais na Segunda-feira de Páscoa.
