An Australian is one of three monitors appointed by United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan for next year's elections in East Timor.
Michael Maley has been named as a member of the monitoring team, along with Lucinda Almeida of Portugal and Reginald Austin of Zimbabwe.
Mr Annan said in a statement he saw the elections as an important step towards peace and stability in the troubled East Timor.
"They will work independently of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste [East Timor] (UNMIT), and will submit their findings and recommendations to the secretary-general and the Timor-Leste authorities," he said.
