United Nations police officers have officially taken over the policing of troubled Asian nation of East Timor, with some 554 officers now serving the new UN mission there. A ceremony was held and attended by some 100 officials.
Trouble erupted between local police and citizens in May this year. Prime Minister Ramos-Horta said at the handover ceremony: "You have a double responsibility and priority: to serve the community and to serve your respective countries."
Overall, 1,608 officers and 34 administration liasons will be added to the UN mission, which will initially run for six months until next year's elections.
