JUSTICE FOR GUBERNUR M.V. CARRASCALÃO

This will be the first of a number of postings, which will continue until MVC former Governor of Timor Timur, RI, during the worst years of the occupation. If anyone doubts it, then they should simply look up history and speak to those who lived during those times and advocated for the right of self-determination for all Timor-Leste citizens.

MVC has to accept personal responsibility for what happened “under his watch”. We have all heard him say from time to time “ I was working from the inside”, “I tried to protect the Timorese”. “I tried to stop the abuses” etc etc…..ad nausea in fact.

Simply face up to what you were a part of whether you like it or not, believe it or not. You were sworn in as a servant of the regime which perpetrated heinous crimes on our people. What will be posted from time to time can be regarded as the case against you MVC; your indictable acts and omissions; using international norms and laws.

So stop carrying on like the savior of this land, you who was the abuser of this land.

You gained much whilst you were a servant of Suharto and his regime. The Position, prestige, social standing, wealth, and the confidence of Suharto to become his Counsel to the President, which you attained was an overwhelming payout for your service whilst your people suffered. You should disclose what you earned during that time, what you accumulated, because it was attained over the cadavers and suffering of Timorese souls.

Below, you ridicule a foreign journalist, Alan Nairn, without which whose evidence the outside world would have remained totally oblivious of the Santa Cruz Massacre and its aftermath, as it did on other numerous atrocities during your time as Gubernur:

Carrascalao Impugns Nairn
From: apakabar@igc.apc.org
Date: Thu Jan 09 1992 - 18:27:00 EST
Material received by Task Force Indonesia:

Suara Pembaruan, Dili, Dec 20 (translation in full from Indonesian):

East Timor Governor Mario Carrascalao considers New Yorker magazine
reporter Alan Nairn as having play-acted [bersandiwara] to dramatize the
misfortune which befell him in the November 12 incident in Dili.
"Actually, his wound could just have been treated with mercurochrome
[obat merah] and would have healed," he said.
Governor Carrascalo disclosed this to Pembaruan's reporter at his office
last Wednesday. He was being asked about the story of this American
reporter who was shot when a riot occurred in the Santa Cruz graveyard
November 12.
According to the statement of an eyewitness, Alan Nairn rejected
medication. With a dressing tied and encircling his head, he flew
directly to Guam from Denpasar. There in public he made out as if
he had been brutalized and severely wounded. Carrascalao considered
Nairn had not acted in good faith.
On his return home with his colleague, Amy Goodman, a reporter for
Pacifica radio, Nairn undertook a travel campaign to spread their version
of the incident in Dili to attract the sympathy of the public and of
Congressmen about the violation of human rights in this Indonesian
province.
Pembaruan's correspondent in Dili heard testimony that Nairn, who
together with Amy Goodman entered Indonesia on tourist visas, suffered
only a small wound near his ear. No information was obtained about
a link between the visit of the two US reporters and the coming to
Dili of a UN officer in the field of human rights, Prof. Koojimans.
Governor Carrascalao said he met with the reporter at the residence
of Bishop Belo after the incident. The Governor offered his good services
to accompany Nairn to the hospital to get medication for his wound.
Indeed, there seemed to be a lot of blood, said Carrascalao. He
immediately added that Nairn "looked active, like he wasn't suffering
from anything. After I examined the small wound, it was almost like
there wasn't any. Indeed, I didn't examine it directly, but from his
body movements he was like someone who wasn't wounded, only pretending.
Later he displayed a severe wound."
According to Carrascalao, his wife Helena Carrascalao also offered
a doctor to the US reporter. The doctor would come straightaway,
but Nairn rejected this.
The Governor concluded that the American reporter wanted to
dramatize matters by putting on an exhibition, boarding an
aircraft with "wounds of his own creation."
"So for me, that reporter was not proceeding in good faith.
He made a small matter into something big. So I consider he
was only an exhibitionist. He left the country in a way he could
be photographed as having a big wound so that the newspapers
could blow things up more over there. In fact, his wound
could have been treated with mercurochrome and would have healed.
But he came with bad intentions."

Comment faxed Jan 9, 1992 by Allan Nairn:

"The governor is mistaken. Indonesian soldiers fractured my skull
by beating my head with the butts of their M-16s. The beating left
wounds and scars across the back of my head, but they are minor
compared to what happened to the East Timorese." (END OF ARTICLE)

The indictment against you:

1. Being an active and willing participant in the Indonesian state driven propaganda machine against advocates of human rights in East Timor by discrediting the witnesses of the massacre;
2. Covering up the truth regarding the massacre;
3. Apologizing for the actions of your Indonesian masters.

ACKNOWLEDGE YOU WERE WRONG MVC. APOLOGISE TO MR. NAIRN PUBLICLY HERE AND NOW AND EXPLAIN YOUR MOTIVATIONS. UNTIL THEN YOU ARE NOT FIT TO SERVE AS EVEN A MINISTER IN THE RDTL GOVERNMENT.
ALAN NAIRN AND HIS COMPANION AMY GOODMAN WERE HEROES TO US THEN.....THEY DESERVED AT THE VERY LEAST YOUR SUPPORT IF WHAT YOU SAY YOU WERE TRYING TO DO DURING THAT TIME CAN EVEN BE IN THE SLIGHTEST BIT TRUE.

Oh writer, where were you in 1991 when happened the Santa Cruz Massacre? You musbe very ignorant about the whole process which Timorese on the ground hardly batlled in quest of an applicable mould to save Timor-Leste from being totally subjugated and lost. Mario Carrascalao is a hero more than you or even Alkatiri. If he was not a governor at the time, Timor-Leste would be continually blocked up to the outside world. He was the one tore up the curtain of isolation Indonesia has been used to hide the in-loco situasion in Timor-Leste. In 12-11-91, even the church was silenced by the crash of Indonesian supression. MVC was the only man affronted challenged by revealing the truth which as the result a number of Indonesian generals were deposed. Where were you? Don't be poisoned by the false propaganda of those irresponsible who wants to damage Fretilin's image. Just go to opposition, as Fretilin I agree while recomposing the fractured Fretilin for 2012.

Suara Pembaruan, Dili, Dec 20 (tradução do Indonésio):

(FIM DO ARTIGO)

A acusação contra si:

1. Ser um participante activo e voluntário da máquina de propaganda do Estado Indonésio contra defensores dos direitos humanos em Timor-Leste por desacreditar testemunhas do massacre;
2. Encobrimento da verdade em relação ao massacre;
