Australia's Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer says he's delighted Jose Ramos Horta has been elected President of East Timor.
Final counting has Dr Ramos Horta securing 69 per cent of the total vote, but he hasn't yet officially declared victory.
Mr Downer says he's become close friends with Dr Ramos Horta over the many years they've worked together on East Timor.
"I know he'll make a very fine president of East Timor and we'll work very well with him, and now we look forward to the parliamentary elections on the 31st of June and hope there'll be a quiet and stable environment as we've had for the presidential elections," Mr Downer said.

O Ministro dos Estrangeiros da Austrália, Alexander Downer diz que está encantado por José Ramos Horta ter sido eleito Presidente de Timor-Leste.
Na contagem final o Dr Ramos Horta assegurou 69 por cento dos votos totais, mas não foi ainda oficialmente declarado vencedor.
O Sr Downer diz que se tornou um amigo próximo do Dr Ramos Horta durante os muitos anos que trabalharam juntos sobre Timor-Leste.
"Sei que ele se tornará num muito bom presidente de Timor-Leste e trabalharemos muito bem com ele, e agora esperamos pelas eleições parlamentares em 31 de Junho e esperamos que haja um ambiente quieto e estável como houve nas eleições presidenciais," disse o Sr Downer.
