A retired Indonesian general accused of human rights violations around the time of East Timor's independence vote has denied that they had occurred.
Major General Zacky Anwar Makarim was testifying before hearings into the violence and destruction around the 1999 poll.
He says there were no gross human rights violations because there was no state policy or order from the Indonesian president to exterminate or burn down East Timor.
The UN has said that militia gangs were recruited and directed by Indonesia's military, and killed about 1,400 people and destroyed much of the infrastructure.
General Makarim was the defence advisor for the Indonesian team meant to safeguard the UN-administered referendum.
The UN-established East Timor Serious Crimes Unit has charged him with murder, deportation and persecution.

Diz que não houve grandes violações dos direitos humanos porque não havia nenhuma política de Estado ou ordem do presidente Indonésio para exterminar ou queimar Timor-Leste.
A ONU tem dito que gangs de milícias foram recrutados e dirigidos pelas forças militares da Indonésia, e que mataram cerca de 1,400 pessoas e destruíram muitas das infra-estruturas.
O General Makarim foi o conselheiro de defesa da equipa Indonésia que tinha por missão a protecção do referendo administrado pela ONU.
