Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says Australian troops in East Timor will try to capture rebel leader Alfredo Reinado alive.
Major Reinado has told an ABC TV Foreign Correspondent crew, which tracked him down in a remote part of East Timor, he will not surrender.
Mr Downer says he hopes Major Reinado will change his mind but Australian troops will not be going after him with guns blazing.
"Obviously it's harder to capture someone on that basis but that's obviously what they're trying to do," he said. "They're right to do that - they only open fire on people in self defence. "They won't be sort of mounting assaults as on offensive with guns blazing."
Mr Downer says it would be better for everyone if Major Reinado surrendered.
"To be honest with you, as an observer of people, I think he looked hunted and exhausted looking at him on television," he said. "I think he would be much better off surrendering himself rather than trying to live day by day as a fugitive in the bush."

O Ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros Alexander Downer diz que as tropas Australianas em Timor-Leste tentarão capturar vivo o amotinado Alfredo Reinado.
O major Reinado disse à equipa doi Correspondente Estrangeiro da ABC TV, que o encontrou numa parte remota de Timor-Leste, que não se renderá.
O Sr Downer diz que tem esperança que o major Reinado mude de ideias mas as tropas Australianas não o perseguirão de armas a disparar.
"Obviamente é mais difícil capturar alguém nesta base mas isso é obviamente o que estão a tentar fazer," disse. "Estão certos em agir assim – só abrem fogo contra pessoas em auto-defesa. "Não montarão assaltos do tipo de uma ofensiva com as armas a disparar."
O Sr Downer diz que seria melhor para toda a gente se o major Reinado se entregasse.
"Para ser honesto consigo, como observador de pessoas, penso que ele parecia perseguido e exausto vendo-o na televisão," disse. "Penso que estaria muito melhor se se entregasse em vez de tentar viver dia após dia como um um fugitivo no mato."
