Ramos-Horta Offers Weapons Amnesty

Dili, East Timor (AHN) - Prime Minister Jose Ramos-Horta of East Timor is offering a weapons amnesty to all Timorese resident in the aim of preventing communal violence which killed 21 people and displaced 150,000 two months ago.

Ramos-Horta warned that anyone who will be caught in possession of weapons will be arrested and detained as he offered his telephone number and the number of President Xanana Gusmao which he said the public can call to turn in their arms.

He said, "Once again, I am urging those who still hide weapons at home, if you are afraid to turn them in, you can dial my telephone, or call the (Australia-led) international forces, or call the president.. Do not store them at your homes, it's illegal."

According to Yahoo News, the country's prosecutor general Longuinhos Monteiro would also take weapons from residents. Those who will voluntarily turn in their weapons will not be punished Ramos-Horta said.

The Nobel laureate adds, "If the international forces and international police find weapons carried on the streets, stored inside cars and homes, those who keep them will be taken to detention center."

The capital Dili was gripped by violence in May prompting the deployment of 2,200 foreign peacekeepers. He said, "We can guarantee that situation in every part (of Dili) has been normalized."
