UN police unit needed in Timor: Downer

The UN's existing mission to Timor runs until June 20 and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Australia supported a short extension of "a month or two".

Australia sent 1,300 troops to East Timor last month in an effort to restore peace following weeks of unrest.

It also has around 150 federal police in Dili and is due to send in around 50 more this week.

Australia believes after the current UN mission finishes, the next phase should focus on political reconciliation, improved governance and policing.

"We believe that there will be a need for international police to remain in East Timor for some time, both with assistance in helping to standup the East Timorese police ...but also to assist with overall policing duties," Mr Downer told parliament.

"That work would best be done under the auspices of the United Nations and we'd be looking at perhaps around 500 international police operating in East Timor under the umbrella of the United Nations."

  1. Yes, yes, Minister...
Under the umbrella of the UN? Are you serious about it?
Can you say it without the beef in your mouth?

  2. Parece de propósito não parece? é que a ONU já decidiu que não vai haver nenhuma missão das NU nos próximos 6 meses. Os timorenses vão mesmo ter que gramar com os aussies a ditar as regras.
