... Quanto à provocação contra a Fretilin, o que dizem agora os defensores dos "confrontos étnicos" das "discriminações" e das "rivalidades"? Mantém o que disseram ou já admitem que a questão é política, como aliás sempre foi?
Translation of Letter to Prime Minister Alkatiri Date: 19/06/2006
Read Four Corners’ translation of the letter from East Timor’s Commissioner of Police to the Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, written 19 May 2006.
SECRET
Allow me to call to your attention to information of an URGENT nature. Today, 19-5-06 in the morning the Commander of Police of the District of Suai informed me that on the 8th May he and some local civilians in Suai saw a person by the name of ARAKAT and some of his colleagues, a total of eight people, armed with UPF (Border Patrol Unit) HK33s.
The Commander of the Unit, sub-inspector Antonio da Cruz informed me that he brought to Dili 17 guns that belonged to members of the UPF (Border Patrol Unit) from Bacua, who had requested permission to come to Dili to visit their families because of the incidents of the 3rd and 4th of May, but the 17 weapons were handed over to the Minister of the Interior.
If this was done with the knowledge of Your Excellency, I will not do anything to the contrary, but I have to say that I had no knowledge of this handover of weapons to the Minister and I have received no orders to do so.
The population is panicking, and if these measures continue, there will not be a way to put an end to the current problems.
